Thursday 24th May – windsurfing ***** The Dip, Felixstowe – sunny and
warm :)
22.33 knot. max, 21.03 knot. ave., 14.17 knot. hr., 19.10 knot mile, 58.80
km., 14.17 knot. alpha.
This is the third day in row out and the forecast was not great, also we
are going down to Surrey later today but could sail AM if the wind was OK.
Checked Landguard at 8 and there were 12/15 knots so it was worth a look
and we were lucky as three of us enjoyed one of the best sessions of the
year - Felixstowe doesn’t get better than this:) I put out a message on
WhatsApp and was joined by Michael Galbraith and with super flat water,
sunshine and a wind cross shore wind gusting to 16 mph I rigged big as
yesterday and Michael went with 7.5. Neil then joined us, he started off
with 8 but then rigged 8.5 which was perfect. The tide was good too,
dropping so we had wind against tide - ideal:) and getting upwind was no
problem even if not on the plane all the time. There has been a small
tanker moored a couple of miles off The Dip for a few days so I sailed out
to see what it’s called and it’s the ‘Bonacieux’. In total I sailed
the two miles out to the tanker nine times!!!! :) so much fun being really
flat by kite beach and the sea a bit bigger further out. I was out non-
stop for and hour and a half, came in took a few pics before heading out
for another hour+ You could see the tide turn when the tanker changed
position so after a couple more runs we all decided to call it a day. We
all said it was one of the best sessions at Felixstowe for ages and only
down side was my big Xantos is a pain to gybe as it’s a little long but
great for sailing with the 8.5. Shame the Bolt owners couldn’t make it
today as the 135 would have been flying in the flat sea, also it’s a real
pity that the WhatApp chat today got a little out of hand and we were not
impressed with the bad language and smutty content:(
So, I had plenty of time to pack up, shower, buy some timber for our
son’s decking and load up the van for our next adventure away. Could
have done without the rain while packing!
The weekend is actually looking promising for a bit of windsurfing so
fingers crossed you can get out - can’t remember the last time I had a
good sail on a Sat/Sun but we will be in Surrey miles from the sea so have
fun:)
